The Legend.
When in Roma, you must visit Harry’s Bar. This bar is full of glamour and style. Walk into a flashback of the days where Sinatra and Sophia Loren could be seen spending time among friends.
The place was originally opened in 1918 under the name Golden Gate. The owner was an American from San Francisco who inspired by her home named it Golden Gate. She was bored with her monotonous life in Rome and wanted a place to spend with her friends. It was a posh tea saloon for many years.
The Beginning
In 1950 it was purchased and the new owner decided to renovate and make changes. It re-opened as Harry’s Bar. Instead of a tea saloon, it became a bar, pastry shop and restaurant.
The 60’s saw a boost in the economy and Harry’s became the spot to be for many celebrities. Some of the celebrities include Frank Sinatra, Audrey Hepburn, Marlon Brando, Lana Turner, Ava Gardner and Silvana Pampanini. Frank could be seen playing the piano on many occasions.
Today
From the 60’s until present day it still draws in celebrities and the rich and famous. From the likes of Mel Gibson, Anthony Hopkins and Hillary Clinton. The decor is focused on the Dolce Vita years and is owned by the Lepore’s Family.
It is a fantastic spot for drinks and gorgeous scenery. It is located across the street from the Flora Mariott and just steps away from the Spanish Steps. Plus lots of great shopping near by.
